Current View of Technology in the Classroom

I think that technology in the classroom is a great thing. I have always thought this, but now that the semester is coming to an end of I believe it now more than ever. I be live that technology in the classroom can enable students to do their best because they have many different options in doing so. Also the technology can allow the multiple learning styles to learn the way that is the best for them. Also technology can be a great tool for children with disabilities. It can allow for them to gain the same experiences as their peers and let them work to the best of ability. Overall technology is a great thing and I can't wait to use it in my classroom.

Blog Post # 11

I think that one of the best non computer technologies is an over head projector. I believe this is a great one because of the simplicity and most schools have them and they are fairly affordable. They are great for those students who are visual learners because the teacher can write and demonstrate in front of the whole class what they need to be doing. Also the teacher is able to erase the writing on the overhead sheets and can reuse them rather than making more or purchasing more of them.

ERIC presentations

I thought all the presentations were great and I learned a lot from them. I actually learned a lot from my own presentations and the outlook on gender in education and technology. I also thought the presentation was great about internet safety because taht is such a huge issue now especially with young children exploring on the internet. This is something that I have been concerned about for myself and now even more with young students. I thought the internet resource presentation was great. I loved seeing the various ways teachers can use technology. I'm really not nervous about incorporating technology into my classroom because I think it helps the students so much and it is a great way to get students involoved in their own learning.

http://www.gigglepotz.com/inspirek_gmath.htm

This link is called inspirekidz. It's a data base that has many different subheadings for you to click on to tell you how to incoporate different technologies into your classroom. The subheadings are those such as using e-mail, powerpoint, webquests, kid pix, online writing projects, ect. I think this is a great site for teachers. The information given under the subheadings is very helpful and tells you what skills the students are going to learn.

How are things going so far?

So far things have been going pretty well and I have learned about a lot of different ideas for using technology in the classroom. I am overwhelmed at times with all of the different projects but I think they are benefical. The most important concept that I have learned so far is the different sites that have been given to us because I think that they are all great and going to be very helpful. The least important concept I believe is the wiki notes. I think that it's a great idea for some people but I would rather just look at my own notes rather than everyone elses because it's easier for me to remember what I typed/wrote rather than what I just read from someone else's notes.

Internet use in the elementary classroom

Part 1
I think the pros of using the internet in an elementary classroom are that the children get to experience the use a computer and figure out how to use it in the early years of their schooling. I also think it is a great tool for learning in general because there are so many different learning games and activities available for young students so why not use them.
As far as cons I think that some parents may not want their children using the internet at school because they may not think it will be monitored closely enough. Also it could allow the students to become off task and do something that they aren't supposed to be.

Part 2
The link above is one of my new favorite sites. It's one actually that some of us had to look at in class on Thursday. It's really cool in the fact that you can find a lesson activity for your students on any topic and it allows you to share your lessons with teachers and students from all over the world.

What Kindergarteners Need To Know

I thought the article was interesting. I understand that teachers need to have guidelines but really do they need to have a 90 page guide? After all of the training teachers receive and experiences that they have they still need to have this manual that tells them what they probably already know. I think that having some sort of guide with all of the expectations that kindergartners need to know and be able to do is a good idea but I don't think that it needs to be 90 pages. I think all references are great and are there to help and support teachers and keep them more organized, but the one discussed in the article is a little extreme.

Images in Education Lesson

My lesson consists of having the students match colors with their picture. I typed three different color words (blue, orange, green)on to a word document. Half of the class would get a different set of three colors so not all of the students would have the same objects. The directions for the students are that they are supposed to take a picture of something blue, orange, and green, a picture for each color. Then the students with some direction on how to do it, would insert the picture under each of the color headings. Then they could write a short sentece about the object they took a picture of. This incorporates colors, language arts, and technology since they used a digital camera and have to type on a computer. The students would then share what they found while on their search for the colors.

Gardner, Bloom, and Dale

Gardner's theory of mulitple intelliences involves eight different learning styles. They are linguistc, musical, logical-mathmathical, spatial, bodily-kenesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonl, and naturalist. Lingustic deals with how sensitive a personal may be language. Muscial deals with recognition of pitch and composure of music. Logical mathmatic is how well someone may understand/analyze problems and carry out mathmatic operations. Spatial is how someone may perceive the world, pattern recognition and recreation. Bodily-kenesthetic is movement based or manipulation with body parts. Interpersonal deals with relating to others and intrapersonal may be someone who knows themself well and understands their motives. A naturalist deals with nature and how a personal may relate to nature. This theory is saying that students may learn in very different ways and that there are many styles of how a person perceives his or her wold and how they learn from that.

Bloom's theory on taxonomy deals with a herachial pyramid of six different levels. The three lowest levels wereknowledge, comprehension, and application. The next three higher levels are analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. In order to get to the next step you have complete the first. There are new terms which we changed by one of Bloom's former students, those are: remembering, understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating, and creating. These are related to students learning because in order to truely learn something the students most take these steps in the learning process.

Dale's cone of experience is based on a cone which is based on relationhips in education and experiences in reality. The cone consists of direct/purposeful experiences, contrived and dramatized experiences, demonsartions, field trips, exhibits, motion pictures, audio/recording/photos, pictures/visual symbols, and text/verbal symbols. In relation to student learning this theory is and experienced based one and by the children experiencing each of these their learning becomes more concrete.

Gardner's theory supports technology integration. With all of the different intelligences the students are able to use them along with technology. But it could detract it because if someone is naturalistic they migt not understand the use of technology.
Bloom's theory supports technology as well because the levels that are completed also can be used when using technology. You can gain knowledge then move to comprehending everything, and then applying it and so on.
Dale's theory supports technology because his theory deals with senses and which ones are used and all of the senses are engaged when technology is in use.

Each theory relates because there are different ways to teaching with technology like Gardner's theory and various steps to teaching it like Bloom's theory. Also Dale's theory relates because it talks about various experiences and there and different experiences in the three different types.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Kacie and I am from Defiance, Ohio. I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and family. I love to go shopping and watch Greys Anatomy, The Hills, and Desperate Housewives. I am also really involved in my sorority. I am taking this course to help me learn more about technology and how to use it in the classroom.I am expecting to get a lot out of this course. My thoughts about using technology in an elementary setting is that it is great to an extent. I think that it should be closely watched because the students are so young. But I think using games to help with math, reading, and lanugage on the computer are great to use and grabs the students interest.
